T-Networks and Oki together provide Unparalleled 10 Gb/s Transmitter Performance

December 10, 2003, Sunnyvale, CA. — T-Networks, Incorporated, and OKI Semiconductor, today announced that the combination of the new OKI KGL4145JW 10.7 Gb/s driver and the latest version of T-Networks high optical output power Laser-Integrated-Module (LIM) provide unparalleled 10Gb/s optical transmission performance. With the KGL4145JW dc- coupled to the LIM104, greater than 11dB of dynamic extinction ratio and +5dBm optical output power have been achieved in a 10Gb/s NRZ transmission format over 100km of SMF28 fiber.

A key differentiator in this driver-LIM combination is the elimination of the ac-coupling circuit between the two which significantly decreases the sub-system level bill of materials and simplifies the board level transmitter design, said David Huff, VP Of Marketing for T-Networks. This level of DEP (dispersion-extinction-optical power) in this form factor has not been achieved by anyone else." The Telcordia-qualified T-Networks LIM® platform, based on EAMP® technology, incorporates integrated Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers, modulators and optical amplifiers in a standard 7-pin EML-compatible package with inter-chip isolated coupling.

Oki's 10.7Gb/s EA modulator driver circuit is a compound semiconductor-based ultra broadband amplifier equipped with high sensitive input of 0.35 Vpp single ended. It incorporates wide output amplitude control from 1.0 Vpp to 3.0 Vpp, output cross point controllability from 35% to 80% and a maximum output offset of 1.2V @50 ohms. This device enables the lowest bit error ratio that can be found anywhere. The driver supply voltage is -5 V, and the maximum supply current is 270 mA. This device has an input return loss of 13 dB and a rise and fall time of less than 28 ps. This high level of functionality is available in a 5 mm surface mount package.

"Oki Semiconductor and T-Networks 10Gb/s product portfolios provide a powerful complementary combination of features resulting in an industry leading transmitter solution for metro, regional metro, and long haul markets," said Tamotsu Kimura, General Manager of OKI Optical Components.
